Espresso or Ristretto

Where ever you go you will always hear someone asking for a single or double espresso. You don't often hear someone ask for a single or double ristretto! So what is the difference between these two shots. Ristretto is traditionally a short shot of espresso coffee made with the normal amount of ground coffee but extracted with about half the amount of water. When less hot water is forced through the grounds, the result is a more concentrated flavor. The coffee tastes sweeter and less bitter because of the shorter extraction time.   Having played around with my machine at home over the last few months I have to say I prefer the ristretto. I personally find it a much smoother drink with more flavour. Next time your out and see a ristretto option on the menu give it a go.
